Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES)

The Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, since its founding in October 2005, has successfully committed itself to educating and informing both students and the public about the contemporary Middle East and contributing to a fruitful discussion about this region. The CMES focuses on the social, political, cultural, and economic affairs of the Middle East and North African region and is a proud member of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures and EURAMES. Many activities have already taken place - oriented towards students - and many more, exciting events are in the works for next academic years. To date, there have been numerous roundtable discussions focusing on many current and important events in the Middle East and North Africa. These are some of the topics presented at CMES roundtable discussions:
  • Iran and its Nuclear Ambitions
  • Egyptian Elections and the Process of Democratisation
  • 2006: Election Year in Israel and the Palestinian Territories
  • Libya and the Mediterranean
  • Political Islam in Algeria
  • Iraqi Insurgent + Media (presented by Radio Free Europe)

Additionally, CMES holds an annual conference, which attracts students and academics throughout the Czech Republic and around the world. Past conferences: in 2006, Europe and the War in Iraq, in 2007, The Middle East and the European Union: Prospects for Peace, among others. The 5th annual conference - "The Middle East after the War on Terror" - will take place March 12, 2010. In its scientific activities, the Centre is committed to balanced, dispassionate, and objective research.
