Conference The Middle East after the War on Terror

The 5th Annual Conference of the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies

The Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at the Metropolitan University Prague warmly invites you to its annual conference. This year’s theme, "The Middle East after the War on Terror," promises to provide scholars, students, professionals, and interested members of the public with insightful analyses of the current state of the region as influenced by the war, as well as its further development.

In his first White House televised interview, President Obama declared the war on terror to be over. It was a sudden end to an era marked by many controversies. What this military, political, and ideological conflict actually accomplished and what were its shortcomings? What it meant for the development of the Middle East in a long-run and how has it changed the political map of the region? And how has it affected the Islamist movements, the prime target of the war?

The panels will bring together experts from different fields—historians, political analysts, religionists—providing thus a unique and interdisciplinary approach and promising a fruitful discussion. The speakers—coming from such diverse institutes such as Harvard University in the US, SOAS in the UK, Université de Provence in France, or Charles University—will focus on both the US and EU perspectives on the war, as well as on the reaction and development of the Middle Eastern states and Islamist movements (namely the cases of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Arabian Peninsula, among others, will be considered).
