Metropolitan University Prague, o.p.s. is a public benefit corporation founded in 2001 that ranks among the private universities with the longest tradition in the Czech Republic. The institution receives substantial attention from university applicants. Recently, our university has been accepting approximately 1000 new students every year, the total number of students in the 2007/2008 academic year being 4000. The MUP offers its study programmes not only in Prague but also in the regional branches in Plzeň, Liberec and Hradec Králové.
Study Programmes
Our students can chose from eight Bachelors, seven Masters study programmes and starting from this academic year also one Doctoral study programme, since we have been granted the right to perform doctoral studies by the Accreditation Committee of the Czech government. MUP has thus become a university for both the Czech Republic and the European Union being the only one in the Czech Republic that offers a complete tertiary education at the Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral level in the specialisation of International Relations and European Studies both in Czech and English.Every year from January to September MUP organizes Open Door Days.
MUP Scientific Activities
We aim to become an academic centre in the field of international relations and European studies in particular and in social sciences in general. We have developed a close cooperation with the Institute of International Relations, Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM, Industrial Property Office, European Patent Office in Munich and the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Geneva.
Research Centres
We put a great emphasis on the scientific and research activities. In 2005, we founded the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies that regularly organize round table discussions, seminars and conferences. A year later, the Centre of Philosophy, Institute for Legal Protection of Industrial Property and Center for Security Studies were founded. All these centres focus on grant research, scientific seminars, workshops, roundtables and international conferences.
In the area of foreign language instruction, our university enables the students to get ready for internationally certified examinations in English, German, French and Spanish.
Special attention is being paid to computer literacy. MUP has been accredited for the ECDL examinations, a certificate valid for the whole European Union.
Students abroad
MUP is a private university that offers the most places within the Erasmus programme. Over 80 students every year can study one or two semestres at foreign universities in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France and Sweden. Our students can also spend an academic year at universities in the USA, Canada, the Republic of Corea, Taiwan and Russia.
Analogically, MUP also offers study stays for foreign students and grants them the possibility to take Czech as a Foreign Language courses at the Language Department. Since 2008 our students can also go abroad for traineeship stays.
Admission Procedure
MUP, as other private universities, has decided to minimise obstacles in the application and admission process and to enable the students to prove their knowledge and skills during their studies. The admission procedure is therefore limited only to indispensable prerequisites (see Admission procedure).
Students with Disabilities
Since 2003 MUP is a "school without barriers" that aims to offer as much assistance as possible to accommodate students with disabilities. In 2005, within the "Help for students with disabilities" programme, we have opened a study and relaxation Day Centre for disabled university students in Prague. This centre was created under the auspices of the Prague Mayor MUDr. Pavel Bém. There are over 60 students with disabilities currently studying in all the MUP study programmes.
