03/11/2017 - Conflicts and their Reflections in South, Southeast and East Asia

9th Annual Prague Conference on Asian Studies hosted by the Department of Asian Studies.

Since the end of WW II, Asia has been a witness to a high number of violent conflicts. Even though, the end of the Cold War has brought relative stability to the regions of South, Southeast and East Asia and the share of conflicts fell substantially, yet, in the last few years, the levels of conflicts (especially domestic) have risen again.

Thus, the objective of the conference is to bring together academics and practitioners to discuss the most pressing (intra- and inter-state) conflicts in South, Southeast and East Asia, as well as their reflections in media, art, film and literature. This conference is, therefore, inter-disciplinary and welcomes research findings in fields such as sociology, anthropology, economics, gender studies, cultural studies, political science, international relations and history.

Themes of the conference:

  • Domestic (ethnic, identity, political, religious, and social) conflicts in Asia;
  • Internal conflicts and their impact on regional security;
  • International (border, land, territorial) conflicts in Asia, with special emphasis on territorial disputes in East and South China Seas;
  • Sources  of conflict in Asia and their conflict management;
  • Conflict and development in Asia;
  • Reflections of conflicts (social, ethnic, political) in art, film and literature.
