19/05/2026 - Psychologist in Uniform: Expert Lecture on Military Psychology at CERERIS

The CERERIS Research Center at the Department of Psychology, Metropolitan University Prague, hosted another expert event for students and faculty members. The guest speaker was Katarína Heřmánková, who has worked as a military psychologist for the past ten years. In her lecture, Psychologist in Uniform, she introduced participants to the structure of the military and the broad range of professional roles available to psychologists within armed forces settings.

The lecture provided an overview of military psychologists’ responsibilities, ranging from personnel selection and assessment to psychological support for soldiers, commanders, and operational units. Particular attention was devoted to the general requirements for military service, the competencies expected of military psychologists, and the practical realities of working in this unique professional environment. Dr. Heřmánková also shared insights from her own professional journey and reflected on the development of her career in military psychology.

An important topic of discussion concerned the role of female psychologists in predominantly male, performance-oriented military environments. During the second half of the event, students engaged in an active discussion covering career preparation, entry pathways into military psychology, professional development, and the day-to-day challenges of the profession. Special attention was also given to ethical dilemmas that military psychologists may encounter in their work.

The event was attended by first-year undergraduate psychology students as well as members of the Department of Psychology at Metropolitan University Prague. For students, the lecture offered valuable information for making informed decisions about their future careers. For the department, the event represented another step in strengthening one of its key areas of expertise: psychology in security, defense, and uniformed services.
